FBR serves tax notices on 3 million non-filers

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched a massive campaign against tax evasion by issuing notices to 3 million non-filers during the current fiscal year.

The FBR has obtained the data of these people from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and will use Section 114B of the Income Tax Ordinance to block their SIMs, mobile sets and electricity connections if they fail to file their income tax returns.

According to the FBR sources, there are 11.4 million registered persons in the country but only 3.3 million of them have filed their income tax returns so far, compared to 5.3 million last year.

FBR unveils plan to bring non-filers from SCBA into tax net

The FBR is aiming to increase the number of filers to 6.5 million by the end of the fiscal year, surpassing the target of 5.7 million.

FBR revenue collection
The FBR has also achieved remarkable growth in revenue collection, despite issuing 54 per cent higher refunds than the corresponding period of the previous year.

The FBR collected Rs736 billion in November, showing a monthly growth of 38 per cent, and Rs3,484 billion in the first five months of the fiscal year, surpassing the target of Rs3450 billion.

The FBR has attributed this performance to the improved tax administration, broadening of the tax base and enhanced compliance.
